The Eternal Value in Soul #TyWrites
What does it mean to find one’s Spark? In Disney Pixar’s new release, Soul, we follow the journey of Joe, who is a middle-school band teacher. His life hasn’t quite gone the way he expected. His true passion (or SPARK) is jazz and he’s freakin good. However, when he travels to another realm to “help” someone find their passion, he soon discovers what his life was missing…passion.
In the film, the story tells us that one’s purpose is one’s spark, which Joe Gardner (played by Jamie Foxx), seems to believe wholeheartedly to his own downfall. He discovers that this isn’t the case. One’s spark is simply a soul’s reason to enter into life, but not necessarily the reason for life itself.
We live in a society that has conditioned us and trained us to understand life and passion the way that Joe Gardner understands it at the beginning of the film. We went to schools that taught us to find your ONE thing, become excellent at that ONE thing, so that you can earn a living off doing that ONE thing you do in excellence. If COVID-19 taught us anything, it taught us that your sole obsession and concentration on just that ONE thing can render you useless. Joe discovers through his experience with 22 (Tina Fey) that one’s SPARK can LIFE ITSELF. Literally, the world.
This is why I love Jesus. This is why I love God. God has been trying to pound into my head how He’s called me to be MORE than just an actor. MORE than just a husband. MORE than just a father. How to enjoy His creation (EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING). We need to cut ties with the idea that we are created for this ONE skill, passion or talent. We are ultimately created to worship God by celebrating ALL of the Gifts, Skills, Passions and Talents He’s already given us; as well as the ones we have yet to discover.
